About Adult Baptism

Baptism is a sacrament – the sacred use of water, commanded by Jesus Christ, to signify God’s cleansing of our sins and our welcome into the family of God. Jesus says in Matthew 28:19-20, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations (people), baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Baptism is not HOW you get saved, it shows that you ARE saved. Baptism doesn’t get you INTO heaven, it shows that you’re a child OF heaven. Baptism isn’t just about what you’re doing, it’s more about what God has done and is doing in you.  When you're baptized, you're marked with the sign that you belong to Jesus.

To explain further, baptism is ...

A visible sign of God's invisible grace, cleansing you of your sin.

  1. Acts 22:16 says, "And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.”

  2. It’s not the water that washes your sin away. It’s God who washes your sin when you put your faith in Jesus. The water signifies that washing.

A sign of your faith in Jesus and a way of showing everybody else that you are a Christian (a follower of Jesus)

  1. Romans 6:4 says, “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."

  2. Going under the water represents both Jesus dying and going into the grave and God putting your sin to death

  3. Coming up out of the water represents Jesus raising back to life and God raising you to new life, free from slavery to sin

A sign that you are a child of God and welcomed into of the family of God, the Church.

  1. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 says, "Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by[a] one Spirit so as to form one body.”

  2. All of us, young and old are in the same family, baptized by the same Spirit, into the same faith.

  3. Baptism shows that we all belong to God’s family.
